Room to Jump
The Moss family of Roman, Mariana and their daughter, Cecilia, are thankful to Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County for the opportunity to have their own home. A dream to come true in the summer of 2010 with a grant provided by Thrivent Builds. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans made a $15 million commitment to Habitat For Humanity International announced in mid-December. The funding will support the construction of at least 181 homes in 37 states in 2010, including 19 in Wisconsin. The financial and insurance services company established a four-year, $125 million partnership with the organization determined to eliminate poverty housing around the world, set to end in 2009. Instead the partnership will continue into 2010 with this pledge. Through this four-year period of the partnership, the FDL Habitat chapter has built two homes. This partnership will be the third and the 18th home to be built since the FDL affiliate began in 1996.
Besides helping to physically build a house, the Mosses believe that the efforts of Habitat / Thrivent volunteers will also provide for "a more stable home for our daughter in which she can grow up happy". Living in a cramped apartment, Cecilia is a typical 3 year old, who the Mosses feel that they are "constantly telling her to stop jumping or for us to always be careful and worried to whether we are making to much noise so that our neighbors wouldn't complain. Having a home of our own will mean that our daughter will have room to jump and play”. Without the partnering assistance of Habitat and Thrivent, this dream would have taken the Mosses many, many more years to achieve.
Roman and Mariana received the good news that Habitat for Humanity had selected them as one of the 2010 Habitat families on their wedding anniversary. They said, "We were so happy and grateful, it was like double the joy which my wife and I will remember for the rest of our life."
Habitat for Humanity offers a hand up, not a hand out; by having volunteers assist families in building their own home. The Moss family must contribute 500 sweat equity hours to the house build project. Habitat then sells the house to the family with a no-interest loan. Roman says, "We are so exited and can't wait to start building our home, a home that we can finally call ours." Homes built by Habitat for Humanity help stabilize neighborhoods making for a better community living for all.
The Moss family home is one of two homes that will be built right here in Fond du Lac. To volunteer your time to help build the Moss family home, call 920-921-6623, or visit www.habitatfdl.org. For more information on Thrivent Builds with Habitat For Humanity, visit www.thriventbuilds.com.
The Thrivent Builds initiative is credited with constructing 2,000 homes since it was launched. A total of 1,300 homes were built in the U.S., with the rest in 32 countries around the world.
In the U.S. alone, the program drew 350,000 volunteers, who provided more than 2.5 million volunteer hours. Globally, about 4,000 volunteers worked on various projects.
