Meet the Yang Family

Pictured above is: Adam Yang, Yia Thao, Kao Yang.  Front row: Malee, Sasitorn and Jerry Yang.

Our family is originally from Laos, where we lived in grass huts built by our own hands. Our bathrooms were the woods  behind the house. Due to the aftermath of the Viet Nam war, we had to escape to Thailand in 1979 and lived in refugee camps. In the refugee camps, we lived in overcrowded, metal roofed buildings that were divided into      sections not bigger than a one car   garage per family, even if your family is very large.

In 1995, we were sponsored by relatives to come to Berlin, WI.  For the first time, we had a decent living. But due to lack of jobs in Berlin, we had to move to Fond du Lac. In 1997, we moved into low income housing and working in minimum wage jobs. We’ve been living here since.

Our family is very fortunate to have heard about Habitat for Humanity. To have been picked for this year’s house is like that of a new parent seeing their new born child for the first time. We are very thankful for Habitat for giving our family of six, this opportunity not only for a brand new home, but also the opportunity to learn what it is to be a home owner. We are very grateful for all the volunteers and those that taught us to give ourselves to help others. In future Habitat homes, we hope to be able to volunteer some more time to help out other families in need.
