Groundbreaking is Good News for Affordable Housing in Fond du Lac!
Habitat for Humanity® International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® join together to increase affordable housing in Fond du Lac. Habitat invites the community to a Groundbreaking celebration on April 10th.
Fond du Lac, Wis. 03/31/2010 – Times are tough and the construction of new homes has slowed considerably across the country. But here in Fond du Lac the Moss Family will mark an important milestone in the construction of their new home—and the community is invited to join in on the fun! The Groundbreaking celebration begins at Noon to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10th at the construction site at 245 7th Street, Fond du Lac. Along with the partner family, local Habitat for Humanity representatives and Thrivent Financial members, Local Dignitaries will speak during a short program.
This new home is a result of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, this partnership has resulted in more than 2,000 decent, affordable homes across the country since 2005. Thanks to its 2.6 million members who own financial products with the organization, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is able to contribute to the improvement of communities like Fond du Lac. Thrivent Financial contributed 65 percent of the house costs and is also engaging local volunteers who are members of Thrivent Financial, members of area Lutheran churches and members of the community at large, to donate additional funds and volunteer their time to work alongside the partner families to build these homes.
“This groundbreaking celebration is a new beginning for a family in Fond du Lac” said Marcia Snyder, Habitat board president. “This decent, affordable home will not only give the Moss Family a strong foundation, it will strengthen our community, as well.”
The Moss Family is more than a little eager to begin construction of their new home. They will contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build it, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. They will also repay the no-profit, no-interest mortgage over a period of years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”
“Being able to help provide a family with a home means so much to Thrivent members,” added Larry Poch, Thrivent Financial Associate of the Fond du Lac area. “Volunteering is important to them, and this gives them a great way to personally support our community by helping families achieve financial security.”
“Habitat For Humanity of Fond du Lac County will be building two houses this summer serving a total of 19 families in our community. Habitat is thankful for partnerships such as Thrivent Builds as it allows our affiliate to build an additional house for a family in need of a basic, safe and healthy home”, stated Kathy Strong-Twohig, executive director. To volunteer your time to help build, or to donate items for the house, please call the office at 920-921-6623. The house build schedule can be viewed at www.habitatfdl.org.
