Habitat For Humanity offers Alternative Gift Giving Ideas

Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County has alternative gift giving ideas for those looking for a memorable and lasting gift this season. For that someone who has everything or is hard to buy for, give a donation in their name in honor of them. Habitat will also accept donations in memory of a loved one too. Your gift will keep giving long after the holiday season is over to this very worthy cause. A donation of just $10 will buy a box of nails or a lovely birdhouse or cookbook, $35 a bundle of shingles or a fleece sweatshirt and $79.50 will buy and finish off one square foot of a Habitat house. These donations will be mentioned in our Habitat Happenings Winter newsletter and a special card will be sent to the recipient. We have wonderful stocking stuffers priced from $1 and up of Habitat logo key chains, lapel pins, cookbooks, embroidered t-shirts, sweatshirts, jean shirts and tote bags. Help to house birds by purchasing a one-of-a-kind handmade birdhouse; we have many to choose from at just $10 each. Or select from over 15 varieties of Old World Santa ornaments donated to Habitat by the Kris Kringle Shoppe. Each is handmade, dipped and painted resulting in an extraordinary old world charm. The result is a beautiful gift that you can all feel good about buying, spreading hope and fulfilling dreams for local community families.

Local artist Trista Holz has partnered with Habitat For Humanity and created a beautiful dicroic fused glass pendant. This vibrant blue and green pendant with gold hand painting of the Chinese symbol for HOME will show your support for Habitat and our mission. Purchase one for $18 or two for $30 and give one as a gift. Items can be purchased at the new Habitat ReStore located at 150 S Brooke Street, FDL.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat empowers low-income families by partnering with them to build decent, affordable housing. Habitat does not give the houses away, but rather sells them to families in need through no-profit loans. The majority of family members whose lives improve through Habitat are children. For them, a decent place to live makes all the difference in the world.

Consider what your gift can buy and the difference it will make right here in our FDL community as we continue our mission to build two houses in 2008. Habitat houses are built entirely with the sweat equity of the partnering families and also the help of volunteers with donations of time, talent and money. Partnering families are selected on three factors: need, ability to pay and a willingness to partner and fulfill sweat equity hours.

To find out more about this worthy community organization, please call Kathy at the office (920) 921-6623 to place your gift orders. Items can also be purchased at the new Habitat ReStore located at 150 S Brooke Street, FDL. Happy Holidays and thank you for your continued support.

“The young men volunteered their time before and after school and as well during their study hall time. When I asked the students if anyone wanted to build this project for free, they all jumped at the opportunity to give back to the community. I'm very proud of the hard work they did”, stated Mr. Nate Lehman, Shop Instructor.

Kathy Strong-Twohig, Executive Director or Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac acknowledged “That the group of students built a superb quality playhouse that well exceeds any that can be purchased in the big box stores. And I was doubly impressed that this group built this 4’ x 8’ playhouse in just one week. I encourage everyone to buy their tickets soon to not only support Habitat but because only a limited amount will be sold.”

Lemonade for Habitat

Devon Pierret with Rachel Hoey and Don Whitty

Nine-year-old Devon Pierret (center) of St. Peter has a summer goal of raising money for his favorite charities by opening a lemonade stand once a month in his neighborhood. Included in his June lemonade stand were fresh strawberries and homemade strawberry jam. Proceeds from the sale went to Habitat for Humanity. With the support of wonderful neighbors, Devon was proud to be able to raise $30 forHabitat for Humanity. His mother Laura stated “What a wonderful experience for us visiting the Habitat house under construction. Devon learned so much more about what Habitat for Humanity really means. I appreciate Rachel Hoey (Habitat partner family) and Don Whitty (General Contractor, pictured with Devon) for taking time out of their busy day to make his presentation important...because of their thoughtfulness, it has encouraged him to do more for the community”.

Partner with Habitat….Build a Home…. One Square Foot at a Time

Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County, Inc. is kicking off a major fundraising project.

It costs $79.50 per square foot for us to build a simple, decent, affordable home using volunteer labor and some donated materials. Join with your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, civic groups, etc. to donate the cost of one or more square feet of our Habitat for Humanity house being built this year!

You will be able to sign your name to a square foot (or as many square feet as you donate to!) when we have the sub floor completed during our construction. Or send your message with your contribution and we’ll do it for you! When construction is complete you will be invited to celebrate with us in the birth of the new home!

Remember, you’re not limited to just one square foot. You can donate as many square feet or rooms as your budget allows. Habitat builds houses in partnership with qualified families who must invest not only sweat equity in building their homes, but make a downpayment and repay a 20 year interest-free loan. These monies are reinvested in land and future home builds.

Your donations to “One Square Foot at a Time” can be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 150 S. Brooke Street, Fond du Lac, WI 54935 or you can drop them off to our office at that same address. We will also accept Master Card and Visa credit cards. Or call 920-921-6623 and we’ll gladly come pick up any donations! More information will be forthcoming on this as we partner with other businesses in town to promote “Build a Home…One Square Foot at a Time”.
