CommitteesBoard of DirectorsThe board develops and authorizes the programs and policies of the affiliate. The Board is responsible and accountable for periodically evaluating the affiliate’s policies and programs. The Board ensures that the Executive Director properly manages the affairs of Habitat and executes and implements the policies and programs authorized by the Board. The Board must plan for the future of the affiliate by anticipating issues and trends affecting or likely to affect its fiscal stability and overall ability as an organization to achieve its stated purposes. Church Relations CommitteeThis committee seeks to bring an ever increasing number of churches into the work of the affiliate and it taps into resources of the church—its tradition, teaching, disciplines, language—to help affiliates appreciate, deepen and celebrate its Christian focus. Committee members serve as resources for planning and facilitating devotions, groundbreakings, dedications and special events such as Habitat’s International Day of Prayer (held annually during the third weekend of September). Communication & Development CommitteeThis Committee continually seeks to raise and maintain the community’s awareness of Habitat’s work in ways that properly reflect the mission, beliefs and image of Habitat. Fundraising and public relations involve a variety of tasks including public speaking, grant-proposal writing to corporations and foundations, researching donor sources, telephoning prospective donors, and letter writing. The Committee should include members with a variety of skills to match these tasks. Also, the Committee needs persons who can develop and implement creative fundraising and publicity ideas and person who can maintain and support the ongoing administrative tasks. Family Selection CommitteeThe responsibilities of the Family Selection Committee are to keep current the selection criteria and present application orientations, screen applications, interview prospective families, and recommend families to the board oft approval for home ownership. The integrity of the Habitat affiliate depends on practicing a fair, objective, nondiscriminatory family selection policy. (This committee works with the Family Support Committee after the family is selected, to continue the relationship-building process.) Family Support CommitteeThis Committee helps families break the poverty cycle and become independent by sharing with them the love of God. The committee welcomes new partner families into the Habitat family and provides them with a mutual support system, educational opportunities, and a forum for discussions pertaining to Habitat home ownership. This Committee is the primary liaison between the affiliate and the homeowner families. The Committee specifically works with families through sweat equity, homeownership education, the closing process, and adjustment to new responsibilities, and continued partnership. Land Acquisition CommitteeThis committee investigates potential properties for building or rehabilitation and researches the restrictions and covenants of potential neighborhoods. Recommends purchase of property and / or homes to the Construction Committee and Board of Directors. Building/Construction CommitteeThis Committee is responsible for both the construction planning and the implementation of the plan. As the number of volunteers increase, the Committee’s focus shifts to establishing contacts in the professional community and provide organization to the construction process. This Committee works with the Land Acquisition Committee in choosing the area in which to work and the type of construction that best fits both the needs of the local community and Habitat’s goals. This committee establishes guidelines for the type of work the affiliate will do, dealing specifically with the materials, amenities, and design criteria for the work. Volunteer CommitteeThis Committee Compiles a comprehensive list of the affiliate needs and develops a recruitment program. Recruitment programs involve publicity through various sources. This Committee will coordinate the orientation and the training of volunteers. This Committee will also coordinate efforts to show volunteer appreciation.
